Teško je reći je li Kronika o Velom mistu storija o nekoliko dramatičnih splitskih desetljeća prerušena u povijest Hajduka ili je, pak, u pitanju priča o mitskome nogometnom klubu zakamuflirana u ozbiljni libar o prošlosti slavnoga grada kojemu, kao što znamo, London nije ni do koljena. Ali koga briga? Prije i poslije svega, posrijedi je knjiga o malim ljudima iz maloga grada, koji će osnovati mali klub. I kako vrijeme bude prolazilo, svi će oni i sve će njihovo rasti. Poneka zasluga za taj čarobni rasplet ide i na dušu odnosno u slavu njihova kroničara. Miljenko Smoje nije stvorio ni Split ni Hajduk, „samo“ ih je opisao kao nitko prije njega, i time stvorio masovnu predodžbu o gradu i klubu, koja se duboko ukorijenila, pa se valja zapitati što bi od grada i kluba do danas preostalo da nije bilo njihova neodoljivog kroničara.
