U knjizi se analizira recepcija književnokritičkoga i romanesknoga opusa Paula Bourgeta u razdoblju od objavljivanja njegovih prvih kritika u časopisu La Nouvelle Revue (1881) do romana Le Démon de midi (1914). Istraživanje se usredotočilo na analizu kako izvantekstualnih (autor i čitatelj, proizvodnja i distribucija djela, odnosi u književnom polju), tako i tekstualnih čimbenika (formalni i sadržajni elementi djela) koji su bili presudni za recepciju Bourgetova opusa. Rad će se temeljiti na analizi dvaju sinkronijskih isječaka u Bourgetovu stvaralaštvu čiju granicu predstavlja 1902. - godina objavljivanja njegova romana s tezom L'Étape i smrti Émilea Zole, Bourgetova glavnoga književnog suparnika. Završni dio rukopisa posvećen je analizi razloga naglog gubitka zanimanja za Bourgetov opus te problematici kanona, odnosno određivanju mjesta koje je Bourgetu dodijeljeno u povijesti francuske književnosti i u udžbenicima književnosti. Poseban odjeljak knjige odnosi se na dinamičnu recepciju Bourgetova djela u hrvatskoj književnosti, napose na prijelazu iz 19. u 20. stoljeće.
