Usred Drugog svjetskog rata u Italiji mladog su talijanskog kemičara židovskog porijekla Prima Levija uhitili talijanski fašisti i predali ga Nijemcima, koji su ga odveli u nacistički logor smrti Auschwitz - on ga je nazivao Lager, što je njemačka riječ za koncentracijski logor - ondje je preživio dijelom zahvaljujući pukoj sreći, a dijelom zbog toga što je kao kemičar bio poslan da radi u tvornici umjetne gume u robovskim uvjetima. „Smrti Prima Levija dobro se sjećam. Sjećanje je to jedva desetogodišnjega dječaka. Zato sam odlučio pripovijedati Prima Levija, kojega sam mogao sresti prije njegove smrti. Što bi Levi mogao reći dječaku Matteu, pred trideset godina? Ovaj strip nije povijest Prima Levija, njegov životopis, već je povijest mog Prima Levija. Ovom pričom zatvaram krug vijesti koju sam čuo prije trideset godina, a ostala mi je teret u duši. Priča o mom Primu Leviju, čovjeku koji se borio hrabro i koji je znao ustrajati, čak i nadasve onda kad bi bilo lakše podleći.“
