Monografija uvaja refleksija o tem, kaj je roman in kaj mu je omogočilo uveljavitev na evropskem prizorišču lepih umetnosti. Iz tradicije francoskega moralizma se je v razmahu razsvetljenstva roman razcvetel pri Diderotu in Laclosu, v 19. stoletju pa se dokončno razvil v prestižno literarno obliko, ki so jo najdlje prignali Balzac, Stendhal in Flaubert. Knjiga je vrhunski prispevek k slovenskemu poznavanju in raziskovanju francoskega romana, ki pa ni suhoparno besedilo, temveč je pisan s posluhom za bralca, prav kakor dela, ki jih obdeluje. Težišče znanstvenega in pedagoškega dela prof. dr. Katarine Marinčič je francoska književnost 18. in 19. stoletja, še posebej pripovedna proza navedenih obdobij. Je tudi avtorica štirih romanov: Tereza (1989), Rožni vrt (1992), Prikrita harmonija (2001) in Po njihovih besedah (2014) ter zbirke novel O treh (2005). Za roman prikrita harmonija je prejela nagrado kresnik, zbirka O treh je bila nagrajena z Dnevnikovo fabulo, roman Po njihovih besedah pa je prejel nagrado kritiško sito za najboljšo slovensko leposlovno knjigo leta 2014 po izboru kritikov. Prikrita harmonija je l. 2008 izšla v nemškem prevodu, zbirka O treh pa l. 2014 v francoščini in makedonščini.
