Znanstvena monografija predstavlja zaslužnega slovenista in literarnega zgodovinarja Štefana Barbariča, doma iz Turnišča v Prekmurju. Po študiju slavistike in hungaristike v Ljubljani in Budimpešti je bil najprej gimnazijski profesor slovenskega jezika v Ljubljani in Črnomlju, in že v tem obdobju je začel prevajati literarna dela iz madžarščine. Pozneje je bil asistent na ljubljanski univerzi, nato predavatelj slovenske književnosti in jezika na Filozofski fakulteti v Zadru, doktoriral pa je leta 1975 z disertacijo Mesto Turgenjeva v razvoju slovenskega realizma. V letih od 1972 do 1980 je bil tajnik Slovenske matice in urednik njenih knjižnih izdaj, od 1981 do smrti pa ravnatelj Slovanske knjižnice v Ljubljani. Kot literarni zgodovinar je Barbarič raziskoval različna obdobja slovenske literature, obravnaval teoretična vprašanja literarne vede in delo nekaterih literarnih zgodovinarjev. Študij na Madžarskem in povojna izpopolnjevanja v Budimpešti so ga oblikovali v enega najpomembnejših slovenskih hungaristov, med njegovim prevajalskim opusom pa izstopajo prevodi mladinske književnosti. Izid knjige sta podprli Javna agencija za raziskovalno dejavnost Republike Slovenije in Mestna knjižnica Ljubljana.
